Dr. Bienenfeld brings more than 30 years of experience in cultural and natural resources management to Marstel-Day, providing expertise and support to the company’s government and private sector clients. She manages cultural resources projects and initiatives, including compliance support for the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Dr. Bienenfeld manages archaeological and above-ground surveys and research tasks, consultation documents, GIS studies, and land-use analyses. She also supports clients that are managing archaeological sites and historic structures in accordance with new climate change initiatives and facility requirements, including the Guiding Principles.

Prior to working at Marstel-Day, Dr. Bienenfeld was an environmental protection specialist under contract to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), providing environmental program support for facilities and real estate undertakings, and managing cultural and natural resource projects. As the NEPA lead for CBP’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Port Modernization Program, she managed over 25 environmental assessments and completed cultural and natural resources consultations and mitigation negotiations. Dr. Bienenfeld served on the CBP Sustainability Steering Committee, providing expertise on historic structures management and regional planning. Previously, she supported the departments of the Army and Energy and other federal, state, and local government agencies in NEPA document preparation and cultural resources projects. Dr. Bienenfeld also helped local governments implement and support archaeology programs.

Dr. Bienenfeld has a BA with a concentration in anthropology from the University of Michigan. She earned her MA and PhD in anthropology from the State University of New York at Binghamton. She meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications (36 CFR 61) for archeologist and historian. Dr. Bienenfeld’s performance on the ARRA port project was lauded by then-DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, and she received the Lean, Clean, and Green Award for CBP’s Port of Entry Modernization Program as part of the FY12 DHS Sustainable Practices Awards.
