 | Guam: Wind Turbines May Help Power Navy on Guam |
 The U.S. Navy may be installing four windmills on Naval Magazine on Guam under a $16 million proposal. The turbines would generate about four megawatts to help offset power used by other Navy facilities on Guam. It would make “a tiny dent” in the DoD’s electricity use on the island – about 41.5 megawatts of continuous power were needed to keep the military running in June. The Navy is pursuing several options to try to add renewable energy in coming years. Money for the project was applied for though the DoD’s Energy Conservation Investment Program, and the Navy expects to hear back within a few months about the windmill proposal. On Guam, the Navy is also laying solar-power “membranes” on top of buildings and using solar-powered lights to brighten playgrounds. Solar water heating was installed at two locations earlier in the year. The new military dog facility will use rainwater to clean out the kennels, and the feasibility of using geothermal power is also being studied.
