Dr. Patrick Johnson serves as the Senior Archaeologist at Marstel-Day and brings more than 15 years of cultural resource and historic preservation experience. He has worked as a project manager and cultural resources expert for federal, state, and local government clients as well as private developers to ensure compliance to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and various state and local laws and regulations. His projects have included all phases of cultural resource management work including SHPO and tribal consultation, GIS studies, land-use analyses, Phase Ia reconnaissance surveys, systemic Phase I shovel testing surveys, Phase II testing, and large-scale Phase III excavations. He has worked on pre-Contact through twentieth-century sites in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Wisconsin, Chile, and Mexico.

In addition to numerous private developers, he has managed fieldwork and projects in general for the Department of Defense, the Virginia National Guard, and the National Park Service. Sites he has investigated and evaluated for the National Register include Native American camps, villages, and lithic workshops; colonial forts and missions; Civil War camps and battlefields; twentieth-century domestic, farmstead, and urban sites; graves and cemeteries including those of Native Americans and African Americans; and historic districts including these and other types of sites.

He earned a BA in Anthropology at Beloit College with a minor in Museum Studies, a MA in Anthropology from the University of West Florida with a concentration in historical archaeology, and a PhD from William and Mary in Historical Anthropology. In addition to cultural resource management, he has assisted and taught courses at William and Mary, published articles and book reviews, presented over 50 conference papers, and given several public lectures.
